Accident with Entrapment at the Bypass

On Sunday 2/8/15 at 1345 hours, Midway Fire Rescue was dispatched to an accident with injuries at Business 17 and Highway 17 Bypass. Engine 811, Tower 814, and Medic 815 responded along with Battalion 81. Engine 811 arrived on scene reporting a two vehicle accident involving a dump truck into a car with extensive damage. Engine 811 officer assumed operations with two patients in the vehicle; the driver was trapped within the extensive damage and intrusion. Engine 811 officer immediately requested a medical helicopter due to the patients’ conditions. Tower 814 arrived taking a traffic blocking position and sending manpower forward to assist with the extrication.

Battalion 81 arrived on scene establishing Ocean Highway command. Soon after, Chief 3 arrived on scene assuming the Safety Chief position. Battalion 81 requested an additional Engine Company, Medic Unit, and medical helicopter for manpower and multiple patients bringing in Engine 821 and Medic 825. Chief 2 arrived on scene and assisted with command operations.

Engine 811 crew used hydraulic rescue tools removing the driver’s door for patient access. Once the door was removed Midway rescue crews extricated the patients. All patients were transported to the trauma center. Mutual aid from Murrells Inlet/Garden City Fire Rescue was requested for an additional medic unit. All units cleared after an hour of service.
