Entrapment on the Double Bridges

July 26, 2016

Around 1430 hrs on June 25th, Midway Fire Rescue was dispatched for a Motor Vehicle Collision at the double bridges. Ladder 831, Medic 825, Rescue 816 and Battalion 81 went responding immediately with reports of multiple vehicles involved with one turned over. Medic 825 arrived on location confirming the report of multiple vehicles overturned and at least one patient still in one of the vehicles entrapped.

Ladder 831 arrived on scene establishing bridges command requesting another two medic units to the scene with the injuries unknown. Engine 821 was the next arriving unit, sending the crew up to assist Ladder 831s crew with extraction.

Battalion 81 arrived on scene assuming Bridges Command, sending Ladder 831’s officer into the operations role of the incident.

The crews determined a “third door” would need to be made which involved the removal of rear door, post and the front passenger door to make access to the patient easier. The vehicle had heavy damage in the front of the vehicle as a pick-up truck that was overturned rolled over the vehicle.

The crews had the patient extricate in less than ten minutes and all patients, total of three transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. Response efforts were complicated by traffic backing up for miles in both directions.
