Hazardous Waste Collection Event

Georgetown County residents and business owners who have hazardous waste to dispose of and documents to shred will soon have an opportunity to do so during an annual community event.

County officials will host a household hazardous waste collection and paper shredding event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Palmetto Ace Home Center in Pawleys Island.

Hazardous items that will be collected during the event include paint, oil, batteries (rechargeable and alkaline), incandescent bulbs, household cleaners, pesticides, fertilizers and unwanted products labeled “poison,” “warning,” or “caution.”

Items that will not be accepted are commercial products, compressed gas, fireworks, explosives, ammunition, radioactive waste, containers larger than 5 gallons, and medicines.

Items that can be brought to be shredded include newspapers, magazines, brochures, blue prints, mail, window envelopes, photographs, file folders (any color) and small binders.

Items that will not be shredded include cardboard, telephone books, plastic bags, personal computer discs, CDs, DVDs, VCR tapes, transparencies, ID cards, microfiche, microfilm and X-rays.

As an incentive to help keep our environment clean, at least 10 rain barrels will be given to the first few residents who bring at least five household hazardous waste items.

Event Location: Palmetto Ace Home Center is located at 8317 Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island.
