South Causeway Structure Fire

On Monday July 11th, at 13:15 hours Midway Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire at 407 South Causeway Drive. Medic 825 arrived advising of a working fire in a double wide mobile home with fire in the attic and heavy smoke banked all the way down almost to the floor. Engine 821 arrived shortly after Medic 825 making an aggressive interior attack on the fire. As the units began to attack the fire, they were advised by neighbors of a medium-sized dog reported in the residence. The home’s occupants were not at home during that time of the fire. Firefighters were able to locate the dog in the back bedroom, non-responsive. Once the dog was removed the crews utilized pet oxygen masks that were donated in the past for such incidents and were able to resuscitate the dog. The dog was taken to a local vet for further treatment. Sadly the dog succumbed to complications from smoke inhalation a few days later.

After knocking the bulk of the fire down, crews operated inside exposing the rest of the fire by pulling ceiling and walls. Command marked control around 2 p.m. where most of the fire was contained but firefighters remained on scene for additional time for salvage and checking hot spots.

Efforts on the scene were complicated by outside temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, heat indices in 110 – 115 range, and two brief downpours.

Mutual aid to the scene and to cover the district and assist on scene was provided by Georgetown City Fire, Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Rescue, and Horry County Fire Rescue.

The department is very appreciate of the support of local residents that dropped off cold bottles of water and Gatorade.
